Question: Is there any way to predict  a freeze?
Answer: When it comes to weather, nothing is guaranteed. First of all, if the day is sunny with a temperature of seventy-five degrees, there wont  be a frost because  the air around the plants is warm. However, if the night is clear and still, cold air settles  to the ground and a frost  is possible. If the evening is cloudy, cold air is not likely to settle . Location is also a factor. Get to know the high points and low spots of your land. Sometimes, low land will be frostbitten while higher ground  will not. Ground  conditions matter. If the soil is cold and dry, the atmosphere near the ground can cool more rapidly; if the ground is moist and warm it lends its heat  and moisture to the atmosphere.
What can be done to save the flowers and vegetables?  Be a weather watcher or let the professionals on the news tell you when there is a possibility of a frost . Water the garden  before nightfall, spraying  both the soil and the plants.Cover the plants with an old bed sheet or whatever you have around. Do this before dusk to contain heat loss. Remove this cover once the sun is up in the morning and temperatures begin to climb.

Question: I want to plant some trees on my property. How near to  my house should they be?
Answer: Because of  it's vast root structure, a tree should not be any closer than ten feet to a building .Fifteen feet would be better. When planting a young tree, it is hard  to imagine how large it will grow in just a a few  years. Take a look at mature trees and imagine  how your tree will grow with a  little care and a lot of water.

Question: There is a hornets' nest in my tree. How can I get rid of  it?
Answer : The bald faced  hornet builds it's nest in trees. These nests are abandoned at the end of the season. New nests  are built  in the spring.  To be safe, wait  until  the weather turns very cold , then you can knock  the nest  out of your tree.If you can wait a little longer, the nest will deteriorate and fall out by itself . Don't be too hard on hornets, they are beneficial. The workers prey on flies and caterpillars. However, it is wise to stay  out of their way.

Question : When should I dig up Elephantears and how should I store them?
Answer: Elephantears (yes, that is the correct spelling) are  tropical plants and cannot be left in the ground when the weather freezes. After the first frost, dig up the plants , dry them off and store them  in a cellar or garage that is cool but not freezing.
