The task for this month is planting—–but when???
The average last frost date for Benton County is April 20 but that is just an average. In an-cient times, or so one of my gardening books claims, it was standard practice to determine if the soil was warm enough to plant by removing one’s trousers and sitting on the ground. If the flesh found it uncomfortable it was too early to sow.

Annuals Bedding plants can be set out  after the last frost.  Plants grown locally are much less likely to peak and die by July.

Bulbs Foliage of spring-blooming bulbs must remain until it turns completely brown to greed next year’s blooms. I know it sounds obsessive/compulsive to braid foliage, but try it. It isn’t hard, and it gets the foliage out of your way. Plant dahlias late in the month. Put a stake next to each dahlia-trust me, you’ll need it later.

General Mulching  is one of the best things you can do for your garden and for yourself. but wait until the soil warms up.

Herbs Plant late April/early May. Most popular: parsley, chives, and basil. Plant in well-drained soil that has at least a half day of sun.

Houseplants I know—both you and your plants want them to go outside ASAP, but restrain yourself until May.

Lawns Don’t fertilize until about tow weeks after green-up. Once the grass turned green you can apply post emergent herbicides to control broadleaf weeds. Read and follow the label carefully. If your lawnmower need repair take it to the shop before the rush.

Perennials Most perennials can be planted now. Begin pinching chrysanthemums, continuing until late July. Divide fall bloomers now, spring bloomers just after they bloom.

Roses Dormant roses should be planted after April 15. It is very important to mulch newly planted roses. Fertilize established roses only. Water before and after fertilizing. Apply fungicide for black spot.

Trees and Shrubs You can still plant container grown trees and shrubs. Feed azaleas after bloom. Prune spring flowering shrubs after they bloom.  Test for success: no one should be able to tell the plant has been pruned when you are finished.

Vegetables Stop harvesting asparagus as soon as the spears are pencil-sized. Side dress and allow ferns to develop.
