Beat the Rush - Soil test now!
What a storm we had! With all that ice, many plants and trees were lost. Needless to say there will be lots of landscaping that will be taking place this spring. Even though landscaping projects may only be in the back of your mind, why not get a jump on your project by getting your soil tested now?
Soil testing can benefit the water quality of the area by preventing the application of unnecessary fertilizers. Too much fertilizer means that you are throwing money down the drain - literally down the stormdrain. Nutrients that are not needed are just going to be washed away when it rains. Excess nutrients in the water can cause algae blooms and low oxygen levels, as well as other issues.
There is always a good amount of people that get there soil tested in the area, but beat the spring crowds and get your soil tests done early. If you have never had your soil tested before, now is a great time to start. Soil testing is a free service through the Extension Office and it will provide you with the recommendations for fertilizers needed (or not needed).
To collect a soil sample for analysis, dig several 4-inch to 6-inch deep soil samples from various locations throughout your lawn, garden, or beds, respectively, and mix them in a bucket. You’ll need 2 cups of dry soil for a good sample. Then bring it to the Cooperative Extension Service at 1204 SW 14th St in Bentonville; testing results will be mailed to you in about two weeks.
